How to make a start at building a home based business: Creating a web presence.

There are 3 basic ways to get your business up and running. You build a website, you build a blog, or you attack the social media side of making money.

And if you are VERY clever, you will do all three. What is important is that you understand you need a web presence to be taken seriously.

Website or Blog. Which is best?

"The debate on whether to use a hosted website or hosted blog will continue to rage on for some time yet".

I too can honestly say my attitude towards owning a blog as a main way to promote a business has changed over the last few years.

However, what you should know is that you need a web presence. And that web presence MUST involve a hosted account.

Free blogs and website are not the way to start at running a business from home.

I’m not going to debate this with you. Take it as fact: Stay away from free websites, free hosting and free blogs. Nobody (customers included) will EVER take you seriously if you take this route.

Whichever route you take at running a business online, one thing remains consistent: you have to sell or promote “something” if you want to make money.

The basic two options are to sell your own products or sell someone else’s products.

Sell your own products: Owning and selling your own products is the ultimate aim of every successful businessperson.

Why? Firstly you get to keep all the profits, allowing you to make much more money. You also start to create a brand which is vital for long term success.

However, selling your own products requires certain skills which you may not have when you first start out at running a business on the internet.

I’m not suggesting you can’t start out with your own products, but I am saying it should not be attempted by the novice without first understanding the 7 skills required to achieve success.

Sell someone else’s products: Selling a product created by someone else is the easiest, cheapest and quickest way to establish a presence on the internet.

You don’t need to worry about product creation, design, sales copy, answering customer enquiries, dealing with refunds or setting up a merchant account. This kind of selling (promoting) is usually referred to as affiliate marketing.

Your job as an affiliate is to presell and drive targeted traffic to the sales page. For this you receive a commission (sometimes as much as 75%) every time someone buys though your recommendation.
